Goodbye Beach

Yesterday morning we got up early and got ready to leave. Our property manager took back our keys and our car and driver were waiting for us at 7:45 am. By 9 am we were at the Almeria airport. The drive there was through the desert and sometimes we could see the Mediterranean Sea as we travelled. It’s a very harsh landscape.
The Almeria airport is quite small but serves international and domestic flights. There are lots of flights every day from the UK and other Northern European locations. Almeria is a favourite holiday destination for Northern Europeans. Our check-in went smoothly as did our 1 1/4 hour flight to Madrid, where we arrived a little after noon.
We soon figured out where the scheduled buses parked. We had to wait a little while for the Avanza bus to Salamanca so we stayed inside the airport. It felt cold outside although it was probably about 15C, quite different from 25C during the day, 18C at night and lots of sun at the beach. A little after 1 pm our bus arrived. We bought tickets from the driver for 24 euros ($36 CDN) each for the 2 3/4 hour express trip to Salamanca. The whole trip was through dry looking agricultural plains.
It was cold and rainy when we arrived in Salamanca. It didn’t take long to get a taxi for a little over 6 euros to our hotel, the Hostal Plaza Mayor, right in the heart of the tourist district. We’re staying here for 4 nights for 58 euros per night for an ensuite room with twin beds. Our room is typically European small but, as always, we choose rooms in 2 star hotels with few amenities but good location, cleanliness, security and WIFI. We’ve discovered that the WIFI is spotty but it sort of works.
Unfortunately, we once again were settled in and hungry around 5 pm. It’s almost impossible to find a restaurant with open kitchen between 4 pm and 8 pm. We trudged around in the cold rain for about an hour and finally ended up eating at Burger King, not a great cultural experience but it filled the gap. Then we came back to our room for an early night. It’s sunny this morning so it looks like a great day to see the sights.
We’ve included a final picture of Anita at the beach, on the rooftop terrace at the Almeria airport and the scenery on the way here.
