Birthday Girl

February 7, 2013 Koh Samui “Birthday Girl”
We wanted to post this yesterday but the internet was out. No idea why except that it was throughout the hotel.
Today is Anita’s birthday. She’s also wishing a happy birthday to the best present she ever got - her sister  Lori who arrived on Anita’s 10th birthday. We’re doing our best to celebrate “FebuLori” as Lori calls it, in suitable style.

Yesterday was an average day at the beach with lots of entertainment. The surf was fairly strong. Due to the shape of the beach, the 3 foot to 6 foot waves break right at the shore. If you wait until one wave has crashed, then run out and dive through the next one, you get out to the calmer water with no problem. Some people never seem to grasp this concept, which creates endless entertainment. They stand right at the worst spot and the breaking waves knock them down and spew them back out on the beach. When they wash up, their swimsuit bottoms are often down toward their knees and the ladies’ tops are all askew. Usually, they squeal and laugh, straighten out their swimsuits and head back out. Some people get scared and never go out again. Anyway, everyone on shore always watches the newbies to see what will happen. We’re rarely disappointed. There’s lots of people trying not to laugh but it’s difficult.
Last night we went back to the Black Diamond restaurant up the street for more good Thai food. It usually costs us $10 to $12 total for a good meal and beer.
This morning, after another good buffet breakfast, we went for a long walk down the beach and then sat on lounge chairs in front of the beach restaurant and watched the entertainment. Today was calmer so the show wasn’t as good. A little after noon we went down the beach a ways to a Thai massage hut. We both got a traditional Thai massage for 250 baht each (about $8) for an hour.
Thai massage is similar to Khmer massage in that the masseuse climbs right up on the table with you and uses her whole body to twist you around. As my masseuse worked her way up both sides of my spine using here elbow to dig in all along the way, she asked, “Too much for you?”. “No, it’s okay,” I replied, as I tried not to cry. We both felt quite loosened up by the time we were done. This wasn’t as good as the massage we got at Meta Spa in Sihanoukville, but it was close.
After that we had lunch from Anita’s stash on our terrace. We’re trying not to eat so much for lunch every day. Then we went back down to the beach to watch the show again for awhile.

After happy hour, we went to an expat bar up the street. We sat at a bar overlooking the sidewalk, what there is of it, and watched the evening street scene for awhile. Then we went to the hotel beach restaurant for a candlelit dinner at a nicely set table on the sand with the surf crashing in.
Anita thought this was a great way to celebrate her 59th birthday.
Today, we've just gotten wifi back but it's sporadic. We've been to the beach for the morning. Calm day so not much entertainment.
Anita would like to thank everyone for their birthday greetings.
